Our parish, the Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Nicolas, holds a deep and enduring connection with the Holy Monastery of Xenophon. Among the many treasures we are blessed with, we have a revered copy of the Icon of the Virgin Mary, the Hodegetria, who stands as co-protector of our sacred church. Her motherly intercession has always been a source of comfort and strength for our faithful, guiding us on the spiritual path.

In May of this year, we had the profound honor of welcoming the Abbot of the Holy Monastery of Xenophon, Archimandrite Alexios, along with several hieromonks from the Monastery. Together, we co-celebrated the Divine Liturgy, deepening our spiritual bond with this historic Monastery, which continues to inspire us with its monastic traditions and dedication to the Holy Theotokos.

This weekend, the Holy Monastery of Xenophon on Mount Athos celebrated its beloved Patron and Protector, the Virgin Mary Hodegetria, with great solemnity. The Synaxis of the venerable Icon took place on October 19 and 20, and was attended by clergy and pilgrims from across Greece and beyond. Among the distinguished guests was His Eminence, Metropolitan Theologos of Serres & Nigrita, who, along with a large entourage, joined in the prayers and hymns of the Monastery’s feast. The night-long vigil filled the Catholicon with Byzantine hymns, chanted by the choirs of the Vatopedi fathers and the Hellenic Byzantine Choir (ELVYCH), creating an atmosphere of heavenly worship.

As we remember this sacred celebration, we are reminded of the deep spiritual connections that unite us, not only with the Monastery of Xenophon but also with our Most Holy Lady, the Hodegetria, who continually intercedes for us. Let us give thanks for her divine protection and entrust our lives to her maternal care. May her guidance lead us all closer to Christ, her Son and our God.
