With joy and gratitude, we reflect on a significant milestone in the history of the Orthodox Church in the Netherlands. On Saturday, December 14, 2024, the agreement for Orthodox Spiritual Care in Institutions (OZI) was officially signed with the Dutch government.

This landmark agreement formalizes the recognition and collaboration for Orthodox spiritual care within the Dutch Ministry of Defense. The signing was conducted by Metropolitan Athenagoras Peckstadt, representing the Eastern Orthodox Church, and Archbishop Polycarpus Augin Aydin, on behalf of the Oriental Orthodox Churches.

This achievement is not an isolated development. Over the last decade, the Orthodox Church in the Netherlands has made remarkable progress, including its growing presence on a governmental level. In addition to the Ministry of Defense, the Orthodox Church has established a strong role within the Ministry of Justice. Here, seven dedicated spiritual caregivers already provide support and guidance to Orthodox inmates across the country.

These steps symbolize not only the growth and increasing visibility of the Orthodox Church in the Netherlands but also its fruitful collaboration with Dutch society. From strengthening spiritual care to supporting the faithful in key institutions, these developments reflect a deep commitment to serving our communities.

We look ahead with hope and confidence, continuing to build a robust and united Orthodox presence in the Netherlands. This historic agreement is a testament to the enduring efforts of the Orthodox Church to contribute meaningfully to the spiritual and social fabric of this country.
