Encountering someone with a disability—or living with one ourselves—often stirs deep questions about life, meaning, and faith. We may wonder what it truly means to be human and how God is present in human weakness and limitation. Too often, our understanding has been shaped more by cultural prejudices than by Scripture and the living Tradition of the Church.
In this three-part workshop, theologian Petre Maican invites us to rediscover the mystery of human personhood and flourishing through the lens of disability. Drawing on biblical and patristic insights, he will challenge common assumptions and open a path toward a more profound understanding of life in Christ.
Participants will leave with a renewed sense of what it means to be human in God and with practical wisdom to help their communities and parishes become more truly inclusive and Christ-centered.
Workshop Format:
Three online sessions of one hour each, held over three consecutive Wednesdays.

Dr Petre Maican is a theologian whose work bridges Eastern Orthodox theology, disability studies, and ecclesiology. He currently serves as a research fellow at the Institute for Eastern Christian Studies at Radboud University in the Netherlands.
Dr Maican earned his PhD in Theology from the University of Aberdeen (2016), focusing on constructive ecumenical ecclesiology and the thought of Dumitru Stăniloae, Hans Urs von Balthasar, and Paul Tillich. His current research explores disability and human flourishing, showing how our understanding of personhood, community, and salvation can be deepened through the experience of disability.
Alongside his academic work, he offers theological reflection and pastoral guidance to churches and institutions seeking to create communities that reflect more fully the inclusive love of Christ.
